This is a question we have been asked quite a few times since the outbreak of Covid-19. The good news in a nutshell is Yes, you can still get life insurance. Even if you have had or have been in contact with someone infected with Coronavirus. There just might be a little more to your application if this is the case.
When you apply for life insurance, they will ask you some questions regarding Covid-19. For Example; Have your travelled to an area affected with Covid-19 in the last 3 months? Have you suffered with any symptoms of Covid-19? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may find that the provider will suspend your application for 30 days or more. This is to confirm that you have made a full recovery if you have been infected or to confirm that you haven’t developed any symptoms.
If you haven’t been in contact with anyone infected with Coronavirus and haven’t shown any symptoms, then normal underwriting will resume based on your medical history. If a provider needs extra information regarding your medical history, they will do their best to underwrite your application by speaking with you or completing remote medicals.
In some cases, the provider will need to put your application on hold to obtain some information from your GP. Whilst GP’s are dealing with Covid-19 and general medical calls as a priority, some GP’s are still completing these. This means it could take a little longer for this information to be sent to the provider, but they are still happening in some cases.
